春节的历史很悠久，传说早在新石器时期尧舜时就有过“春节”的风俗。
关于“春节”的起源，有一种传说是：中国古时候有一种叫“年”的兽，头长触角，凶猛异常。“年”长年深居海底，每到特定的一天(现在说的除夕)才爬上岸，吞食牲畜伤害人命。因此，每到除夕这天，村村寨寨的人们扶老携幼逃往深山，以躲避“年”兽的伤害。
有一年除夕，从村外来了个乞讨的老人。乡亲们一片匆忙恐慌，没人答理这个乞讨老人，只有村东头一位老婆婆给了老人些食物，并劝他快上山躲避“年”兽，那老人把胡子撩起来笑道：“婆婆若让我在家呆一夜，我一定把‘年’兽赶走。”老婆婆继续劝说，乞讨老人笑而不语。
半夜时分，“年”兽闯进村。它发现村里气氛与往年不同：村东头老婆婆家，门贴大红纸，屋内烛火通明。“年”兽浑身一抖，怪叫了一声。将近门口时，院内突然传来“砰砰啪啪”的炸响声，“年”浑身战栗，再不敢往前凑了。
原来，“年”最怕红色、火光和炸响。这时，婆婆的家门大开，只见院内一位身披红袍的老人在哈哈大笑。“年”大惊失色，狼狈逃蹿了。第二天是正月初一，避难回来的人们见村里安然无恙，十分惊奇。这时，老婆婆才恍然大悟，赶忙向乡亲们述说了乞讨老人的许诺。
这件事很快在周围村里传开了，人们都知道了驱赶“年”兽的办法。从此每年除年，家家贴红对联、燃放爆竹;户户烛火通明、守更待岁。初一一大早，还要走亲串友道喜问好。这风俗广泛流传，成了中国民间最隆重的传统节日。
有说“春节”起源于中国殷商时期年头岁尾的祭神祭祖活动(腊祭)。西周初年已有了一年一度在新旧岁交替之际庆祝丰收和祭祀祖先的风俗活动，可以认为是“年”的雏形。但“年”的名称出现却较晚，年的名称是从周朝开始的。古代帝王继位，为了显示“天子”的权威，往往自立历法。年的时间到了西汉才正式固定下来，一直延续到今天。汉武帝(公元前140年～前87年)继位，决定重修历法使之统一，司马迁建议创立了太初历，把春节定在孟春正月。

这时，旁边的人就帮忙夹一下。也不顾什么卫生不卫生的。大家吃吃喝喝，也不管什么礼节，吃得开心就好。男人归男人坐，女人归女人坐，小孩么，就归小孩坐。男人们大多喝酒，大家都在聊天，说到尽兴处，还哈哈大笑起来，真有股把酒言欢的感觉;女人有的小酌一杯，也不多喝，有的就喝些饮料。大家来聊聊家常，谈些生活小事;小孩呢?大人不让喝酒，统统都喝饮料，偶尔像大人那样碰一下杯，然后相视一笑，感觉有趣极了。

在农村里，春节的味道又会不一样。在农村或许不会听到连续不断的炮声，也不会身在浓雾之中。有的或许是孩子们欢笑，大人们的闲谈，看似简单却带着传统的味道。
