何为句法复杂性?秦晓庆和文秋芳 (2002) 将句法复杂性概括为写作中的句法复杂性表现在句式的变化和复杂程度上, 即句中嵌入各种语言结构和不同的句型。语言单位的长度, 嵌入结构的数量, 结构类型的数量, 以及具体结构的复杂程度, 等等, 都是研究句法复杂性时需要量化的对象。Ortega (2003) 指出:句法复杂性 (syntactic complexity) 又称句法成熟性 (syntactic maturity) , 是指语言产出形式的范围和形式复杂化的程度。因此, 产出单位的长度、从句嵌入的量和结构类型的范围等都是句法复杂性量化的对象。

在句法复杂性研究方面, 国内外都有学者进行相关研究。国外学者 (Beers&Nagy, 2007;Ortega, 2003、2005, 等等) 对英语学习者的句法复杂性与作文水平的关系进行了研究, 还分析了影响句法复杂性各个指标与作文水平之间关系的不同因素。国内学者, 如杨玉晨等人 (1994) 从句子类型和句子结构方面对英语专业大二学生的英语写作进行了分析, 结果发现:作文中充斥着大量不完整的句子, 而且句法缺少变化。陈慧媛等人 (1998) 从三个方面探讨了不同二语写作任务和条件对写作的准确性、复杂性和流利性的影响。但是, 这些研究成果仅仅只是反映了句法复杂性的几个方面, 并没有很好地揭示其中的发展规律。例如:英语学习者在写作中要关注句法复杂性, 并在写作中予以采用。句法复杂性在大型考试的阅卷中是否占有举足轻重的作用?而考生一旦在考试中重视句法复杂性, 则是否会对作文质量有影响?相比较而言, 国内的句法复杂性研究还不多见, 明显滞后于词汇复杂性或丰富性的研究。鉴于国内现有的教育水平和学生的英语写作质量, 我们认为在教学中应意识到句法和词汇的复杂性具有同样重要的作用。本研究以中国英语专业学生专业八级考试的真题作文为语料, 将句法复杂性常用的不同指标置于同一项调查中, 以期发现学生句法复杂性与作文质量的相关性。

2. 研究设计

选择《英语专业八级写作指南》中2005年至2008年历年的英语专业八级真题作文为语料, 每年9篇真题作文共计36篇, 将作文评改分数和计算机评估获得的作文句法复杂性的数据进行对比分析, 以此检验英语专业八级作文质量水平是否与句法复杂性呈正相关。

2.1 研究问题

根据国内外学者对于句法复杂性方面的已有研究, 本文主要探讨专业英语八级作文水平与句法复杂性的关系, 提出以下两个问题。

(1) 作文质量水平的高低是否与句法复杂性呈正相关性?

(2) 优秀作文的句法复杂性主要体现在哪几个句法复杂性指标?

2.2 数据收集与整理

“句法复杂性包括单位长度 (unit length) 和子句密度 (clausa density) 两个变量;子句密度即句法从属性, 最常用的两个指标是T单位复杂性比率 (T-unit complexity ratio) 和从属句比率 (dependent clause ratio) 。长度指标测量长度单位内使用词语的量, 密度指标则用于测量某长度单位内使用子句或从句的量” (鲍贵, 2010:166) 。鲍贵的研究将单位长度、子句密度、T单位复杂性比率和从属句比率作为句法复杂性的主要参考指标, 这是已有相关研究中常用的几个数据指标。我们在结合了自身的研究目的和参考已有研究方法后, 将主要单位长度mean length of T-unit (MLT) 、主要从句长度mean length of clause (MLC) 和T单位复杂名词complex nominal per T-unit (CNT) 作为检验句法复杂性的指标。

语料来自《英语专业八级写作指南》。我们根据年限, 从2005年开始到2008年, 每年9篇真题作文, 通过计算机二语句法复杂性分析器获取每篇作文有关句法复杂性的相关数据。

在八级考试的作文评阅中, 一般将作文分为五个等级 (《英语专业八级写作指南》) :优秀作文 (18—20分) 、良好作文 (15—17分) 、尚可作文 (12—14分) 、问题作文 (9—11) 和失败作文 (6—8分) 。其中, 优秀作文的要求是作文观点清楚, 结构合理, 内容充实, 语言运用得体, 基本没有语言错误。

根据《英语专业八级写作指南》对于作文等级的描述, 我们可以得知一篇作文如果要获得高分, 就必须兼顾内容、结构和语言表达各个方面, 不仅要做到观点清晰, 结构完整, 内容充实, 而且在内容的安排上要合理紧凑、连贯统一, 语言表达要准确、恰当, 语言的结构和词汇的运用要尽可能多样化。2004年的八级作文阅读卷明确指出:作文中有漂亮用词用句的应适当加分。概括而言, 作文中是否用词造句的多样化对作文分数的高低有很大的决定作用。而换言之, 这就是我们要检验的英语句法复杂性对作文质量水平的影响。我们将《英语专业八级写作指南》中同一年限的3篇作文用计算机二语句法复杂性分析器进行分析, 以获取每篇作文句法复杂性的相关数据, 每年1组, 共进行4组数据对比, 从中得出检验结果。

3. 结果与分析

我们对《英语专业八级写作指南》中的36篇真题作文通过二语句法复杂性分析器进行分析, 对得出的4组数据进行Excel表格汇总, 并选出具有代表性的数据进行柱形图表示, 得到了如下总的对比结果。

根据上述图表, 我们不难看出作文分数在8—20分四个区分段里, MLT (mean length of T-unit) , 即主要单位长度占了较重的比例, 尤其是满分作文 (20分) 中MLT达到了19.83%;相比之下CNT (complex nominal per T-unit) , 即T单位复杂名词所占的比例倒不是很大;其次MLC (mean length of clause) , 即主要从句长度在作文中也占据了一定的比例。纵观整个图表, 在这四组分析数据中, 我们不难看出MLT这个数据代表的条形柱有明显的上升趋势, 作文分数越高, MLT上升的幅度越大。MLC虽然变化幅度不如MLT明显, 但是, 依旧可以看出呈现一定幅度的上升趋势。这在一定程度上说明MLT (主要单位长度) , 即英语专业八级作文的句法复杂性与作文质量水平呈现正相关的趋势, 学生作文的单位长度越长, 就越增加了句子的难度。

对比图表中优秀作文 (20分) 与失败作文 (8分) 的MLT、MLC和CNT的变化情况, 我们可以明显地看出MLT和MLC的变化趋势, 其中MLT的变化非常明显, 而MLC次之, CNT的变化几乎看不到。从这一变化趋势来看, MLT可以作为衡量优秀作文句法复杂性的最为重要的指标, 而MLC这一数据指标可以作为辅助手段衡量优秀作文的句法复杂性。

总结这些数据分析, 我们基本可以得出句法复杂性与作文分数呈现正相关的趋势这一结论, 而优秀作文的句法复杂性主要体现在MLT (主要单位长度) 和MLC (主要从句长度) 这两项指标上。

4. 结语

在句法复杂性的研究方面, 国内外学者都已取得了一定的成效。但是, 在英语专业学生的作文水平与句法复杂性的相关性研究方面, 目前的研究数据相当少。我们选取英语专业八级真题作文, 通过计算机二语句法复杂性分析器, 探讨了句法复杂性与专业英语作文水平之间的关系。研究表明句法复杂性主要体现在主要单位长度和主要主从长度这两个指标上, 与作文分数呈现正相关的趋势, 即在一定程度上, 专业英语八级作文的句法越复杂, 该作文的得分也相对较高。

二、如何有效指导高考英语作文

1.段落式模板是知识的负迁移，是应试教育的产物。负迁移通常表现为一种学习阻碍另一种学习的顺利进行以及知识的正确掌握。学生在教师指导下机械、重复使用段落式模板，逐渐失去了知识积累的意识，失去了逻辑思维能力，与重视能力培养、个性发展的素质教育背道而驰，也违背了高考考查学生语用能力的指导思想。
