网卡, 又称为网络接口卡或网络适配器, 英文全称为Network Interface Card (NIC) 。它是连接计算机和网络的硬件设备, 也是组建网络的基本组成部分之一, 计算机利用网卡与网线进行数据交换来实现网络资源的共享。

网卡的工作主要是整理计算机上发往网线上的数据并将数据分解为适当大小的数据包之后向网络上发送出去, 它主要有两个作用———发送数据 (将计算机里数据打包后向网络发送) 和接收数据 (将其他设备传输过来的数据包, 先经过拆包, 再变成计算机可以识别出来的数据) 。

每一块网卡在出厂前都设定了MAC地址, 每块工作于网络之中的网卡的物理地址都是独一无二的。

按网络传输速速率的不同, 网卡可以分为10Mbps、100Mbps、10/100Mbps自适应和千兆网卡。目前最常见的是10/100Mbps自适应网卡。自适应网卡可以根据网络带宽自动调节传输速率。目前我们使用的独立网卡一般都是PCI网卡。

此外, 网卡还可分为集成网卡、内置网卡和外置网卡。集成网卡是指主板上集成的网络芯片, 一般带有集成网卡的主板上都有网卡接口:内置网卡即我们通常所见到的插卡式网卡;外置网卡主要针对笔记本电脑, 大多采用USB接口。网卡处理数据的方式可以分为半双工和全双工两种。半双工指的是网卡和网络设备不能同时进行发送和接收数据;而全双工网卡中建有缓冲区, 因而具备了同时发送和接收数据的能力。

MODEM也是网络的重要设备, MODEM也叫调制解调器。由于电话线只能传输模拟信号, 因此, 我们就需要在电脑与电话线之间加入一个可以进行数字与模拟信号相互转换的设备, 这个设备就是调制解调器, 也就是我们通常所说的“猫”。

按连接方式的不同, 它可以分为外置MODEM和内置MODEM和现在常用的ADSL猫 (也属外置) 等。其中外置的大部分为串口和USB接口产品, 内置的以PCI接口的最为常见。外置MODEM的优势在于, 一是上网的稳定性会比较好, 不易掉线:二是无需打开箱就可以方便安装, 但是它需要整流电源供电, 而且价络比内置的要高。

MODEM还有“软”、“硬”之分, 如果调制和解调以及指令控制都是由MODEM内部的芯片来完成的, 我们称之为“硬猫”;如果省去了指令控制器, 而这部分工作由软件来实现的话, 运行时要占用大量的主机资源, 这种MODEM我们称之为“软猫”。

当我们用电脑MODEM拨号上网, 向网上的其它电脑传输数据时, 先通过MODEM把数字信号转换为相应的模拟信号 (即调制) , 然后才能通过电话线发送出去。当网上的另一台电脑通过电话线接收到这个模拟信号时, 也必须先由MODEM把它转换为相应的数字信号 (即解调) , 然后才能交给电脑识别和处理。两台电脑之间的远程通讯, 就是通过这样一个调制 (数字到模拟) 与解调 (模拟到数字) 的过程来实现。

ADSL是“非对称数字用户环路”的简称, 它的特点是能利用普通电话线提供高达8Mbps的下载速率和640Kbps的上行 (本地计算机向网络传输信息) 速率, 而且上网和打电话互不干扰。ADSL MODEM的技术更为先进, 并且有更好的抗干扰性, 特别是能根据实际线路及外界环境干扰自动调整通道的传输速率。这也是我们现在最为常用的一种猫。

双绞线是我们最常见的网络传输介质, 通常直接将其称为“网线” (事实上网线主要有双绞线、同轴电缆、光缆三种) 。双绞线是将一对或一对以上的双绞线封装在一个绝缘外套中而形成的一种传输介质。为了降低信号的干扰程度, 电缆中的每一对双绞线一般是由两根绝缘铜导线相互扭绕而成。双绞线两端安装有RJ-45接头即水晶头。它分为非屏蔽双绞线和屏蔽双绞线两类。屏蔽双绞线外面由一层金属材料包裹, 以减小辐射, 防止住处被窃听, 同时具有较高的数据传输速率;非屏蔽双绞线无金属屏蔽材料, 只有一层绝缘胶皮包裹, 价格相对便宜, 组网灵活, 一般情况下我们都采用非屏蔽双绞线。

RJ-45接头内有8个凹槽, 简称“8P8C“的别称。和RJ-45很相像的RJ-11接头, 也就是电话线接头, 它只有4个槽, 槽内仅有2个或4个金属接点, 因而外形比RJ-45接头略小一些。这两种接头的金属接点不同, 因而不能混用。
