定语从句在复合句中起定语作用,可以限制、描绘或说明主句中的某一单词、短语或整个主句。被定语从句所限制、描绘或说明的单词、短语或主句叫做先行词。先行词有3种:第一种是单词,通常是名词、代词,有时也可以是形容词;第二种是短语;第三种是子句。定语从句由关系词把它和主句连接起来。引导定语从句的关系词有关系代词和关系副词。常用的关系代词有that,which,who whom,whose,有时可用as或but。常用的关系副词有when,where,why.关系代词在从句中作主语,表语,宾语或定语,关系副词在从句中作状语。

在英语的各种从句中,定语从句最为复杂,因此翻译时难度也最大。这主要是因为英语中定语从句后置的语言现象在汉语里是不存在的。英语定语从句为右开放型,放在被修饰词语之后,一个句子可以向右扩展成无数个从句。这样,定语从句的后置使句子长而复杂。而汉语则不然,定语部分置于被修饰词之前,一般是前置定语,不能像英语那样随意地扩展,句子较短。英汉两种语言句子结构上的这些差异给翻译定语从句带来了许多困难,在翻译上不如其他名词性从句或副词性从句那样有比较固定的模式可循,必须根据句子的特点,结合上下文灵活处理。同时,从定语从句和它修饰的名词的关系来看,有限定性和非限定性的差别。所以,定语从句可分为:限定性定语从句、非限定性定语从句、兼有状语功能的定语从句及特种定语从句等。下面,将针对各种类型定语从句的特点及各种情况研究其译法。

二 定语从句的译法

1)限制性定语从句的译法

限制性定语从句对所修饰的先行词起限制作用,与先行词关系密切,其中间不用逗号分开,带有限制性定语从句的句子,主句的含意是不完整的,必须靠从句的补充说明,全句意义才能表达清楚,如果去掉从句,全句意义就会改变,甚至不通,翻译这类英语句子时经常可采用下列译法:

1. 合译法

亦称前置法,主要是指把英语限制性定语从句译成带“的”字的定语词组,放在被修饰词之前,从而将复合句译成汉语单句,这种方法多用于结构简短,对先行词限制较强的定语从句。例如:

The people who worked for him lived in mortal fear of him.

在他手下工作的人对他怕得要死

2. 分译法

亦称后置法,是指将定语从句与主语分开,译成并列分句,这主要是在从句结构复杂或译成汉语前置不方便,不符合汉语语言特点的时候,可考虑采用分译法,限制性定语从句译成并列分句时,可分为重复先行词和省略先行词两种形式:

a.译成并列句,重复先行词的含义。例如:

A moment later he steps onto a moving stairway that takes him rapidly up to the street level.不一会,他踏上了滚动的电梯,滚动的电梯载着他很快地升到了街面。

b.译成并列分句,省略先行词。例如:

They worked out a new method by which production has now been rapid increased.

他们制定出一种新方法,采用之后生产已迅速得到提高。

3. 融合法

a.融合法是指把原句中的主语和定语从句融合起来译成一个独立句子,这样,定语从句在汉译后成为单句中的谓语等句子成分。这种译法特别适用于“there be”结构带有定语从句的句型。例如:

There are many people who want to see the film.许多人要看这部电影。

b.此外,还有一些带有定语从句的英语复合句,译成汉语时可将英语主句压缩成汉语词组作主语,而把定语从句译成谓语,融合成一个句子。例如:

“We are a nation that must beg to stay alive,”said a foreign economist.

一个外国经济学家说道,“我们这个国家不讨饭就活不下去。”

2)非限定性定语从句的译法

非限定性定语从句与它所修饰的词关系不很密切。只是起补充说明的作用,主句和从句之间用逗号分开。非限定性定语从句,或是修饰主句中的某一名词,或是修饰整个主句。非限定性定语从句与限定性定语从句的翻译方法几乎完全一样,但有所区别的是,非限定性定语从句主要采取分译法作为并列分句进行翻译。

1.分译法

由于非限定性定语从句与被修饰词之间的关系不很密切,只对先行词进行描写,叙述或结实,而不加以限制,因此,翻译非限定性定语从句的最常用的方法就是分译法。运用分译法翻译非限定性定语从句时,大致可分为三种情况。

a.译成并列分句,重复先行词的含义。例如:

We will put off the sports meet until next week,when the weather may be better.

我们要将运动会延到下周,那时天气也许会好。

b.译成并列分句,省略先行词。例如:

Days and nights are very long on the moon,where one day is as long as two weeks on the earth.在月球上,白天和黑夜都相当长,一天等于地球的两周。

c.译成独立句。例如:

Nevertheless the problem was solved successfully,which showed that the computations were accurate.不过,问题还是圆满地解决了。这说明计算很准确。

2.合译法

对于一些较短而具有描写性的非限定性定语从句,也可译成带“的”字的前置定语,放在被修饰语的前面,把主从复合句译成一个单句。例如:

He liked his sister,who was warm and pleasant,but he did not like his brother,who was aloof and arrogant.他喜欢热情愉快的妹妹,而不喜欢冷漠高傲的哥哥。

3)兼有状语职能的定语从句的译法

在英语中,有些定语从句跟主句在逻辑上有状语关系,实际上起着主句的原因,结果,目的,条件,让步等状语的作用。这时,就要求我们对定语从句进行转译,译成相应的状语从句。

1.译成原因状语从句

We know that a cat,whose eyes can take in many more rays than our eyes,can see clearly in the night.我们知道,由于猫的眼睛比我们人的眼睛能吸收更多的光线,所以猫在黑夜也能看得很清楚。

2.译成结果状语从句

3.译成让步状语从句

4)特种定语从句的译法

所谓特种定语从句,指的是修饰整个主句或主句部分内容的非限制性定语从句。这种定语从句只能由which和as引导。

1.Which引导的特种定语从句译法

Which引出非限制性定语从句时,它通常表示整个主句的意思,用来对主句所叙述的事实或现象加以总结概括,补充说明或承上启下,其前面都有逗号分开。对于这种情况,翻译时采用分译法,将关系代词which译作“这”,“这样”或“从而”,“因而”等。例如:

We took a short cut through the woods,which saved about ten minutes.

我们抄近路穿过森林,这样我们少花了大约十分钟。

2.as引导的特种定语从句译法

as引出定语从句时,这种定语从句近似插入语或状语,通常对主句所作出的陈述予以附加说明,这和which代表全句的意思很相似,但as有“正如”含义,而which没有。As在从句中的位置较灵活,可在主句之前,之中或之后。而且,as与某些词语的搭配能力很强,也相当固定,具有某些习惯特征。对于含这种定语从句的句子,翻译时一般采用分译法,把关系代词译成“这”,“正如”,“象”,“如”等。例如:

一、医学英语的翻译标准

医学英语翻译是沟通国际之间的医学信息，目的在于向国外宣传医学的新发现以及学习国外的先进的医学知识和操作技术，使得不同民族和不同国家之间能够无障碍的沟通医学。不同的翻译家对于医学英语的翻译标准的认知不同，但是普遍公认“通顺”和“忠实”为最基本的标准。医学文献的翻译要在完全了解原文的前提下，同时考虑到医学知识中的特点，翻译为可以准确思想的词语。翻译的文章中的数据与概念必须与原文一模一样，没有错误，能够准确表达原文的思想主旨。同时，翻译的文章不可以使用高深的词汇，使读者可以读懂文章，在翻译的过程中，翻译者可以根据自己国家的说话风格、习俗等加入一些地方特点。

二、医学英语特点及其翻译

医学英语是具有其独特的特点，主要是描述疾病的诊断、治疗等医学科学，传授医学知识，医学英语的语法结构和词汇运用都不同于常规英语，如医学英语词汇复杂且数量多，一个词语有多种意思，句子复杂程度高，包含有大量的从句等等。

1.词汇特点及其翻译。普通英语词汇在普通英语中的意思与在医学英语中的意思不相同，例如colon在普通英语中指冒号，但在医学英语中一般指结肠；pupil在普通英语中可以指学生，但在医学英语中是指瞳孔。并且普通英语词汇与其他普通英语词汇搭配使用时，就会表达出医学英语，例如，general与check up搭配，general check up为普查的意思，general hospital是指综合性医院。

医学英语中的词汇有很多是由来自希腊或拉丁语中词根衍生而来的，如果学者了解词根，则词根与其他单词的组合所表示的单词意思简单易懂，容易联想而得知。但是，这类词汇衍生后的数量巨大，同一词根与不同的单词组合在一起便是不同的意思，没有构词知识和不了解规律的学生是很难看懂这些词汇的。例如，词根cyto的意思是细胞，其衍生出的单词cytoplasm为细胞质的意思，erythrocyte为红细胞的意思，cytoplogy是细胞学的意思，等等。很多人因此对医学英语产生偏见，认为派生词就是医学英语的词汇。

英语中的有些词汇是以地名、人名或者是姓氏等代表一些解剖位置、操作方法等等，在这些地名、人名或者是姓氏后面经常添加指示剂、方法、试剂、反应等普通英语词汇，在翻译过程中，我国一般采用直接音译的方法，翻译人名，例如Gram s method是指革兰方法的意思。此外，还有非医学词汇构成的医学专业术语，例如粪便feces，恶心呕吐nausea等等。

因此，全面掌握医学英语的词根和特点、类型以及对应句子中的正确理解对提高医学英语翻译有着至关重要的作用。

2.句型结构特点及其翻译。医学英语中最为常见的句型就是被动语态，并且基本全文都为长句。医学论文属于科学技术论文，其所描述的都为客观事实和科学结果，因此，需要被动语态来加强语气，突出这段中所描述的事物。在论文中，人们需要将更多的注意力放在疾病或者是患者，而不是关注进行疾病诊断或患者治疗的医生，因此，采用被动的语态突出患者或者是疾病。翻译的过程中，并不需要翻译为被动句，可以根据前后句和全文的联系，翻译为主动句或者是描述客观事实的it 句型。

长句多具有数个从句，每个从句之间结构较为复杂，可能是从句中套有从句，翻译过程中需要把握该长句的中心意思，然后整理各个从句之间的逻辑顺序，按照顺序依次翻译，但是需要注意翻译句子的联系性，通顺的简洁的将原文翻译出来。
