一、行业英语
行业英语又称专门用途英语(ESP)。随着西方国家科学技术及经济的迅猛发展，英语成为最普及的交流工具，人们学习英语的目的由单一性向多样性发展，学习英语不再被看成仅仅是获得一种良好的教育，而且与职业、学业和就业相关的多种需求联系起来，由此，专门用途英语就应运而生了。
学习ESP可以一举两得：不仅学习了特定专业的专业词汇、常用句式、文体风格，而且熟悉该专业的内在知识体系。它是语言技能训练与专业知识学习的结合。
二、英语分类方法
英语学习按照不同的主线，可以分成不同类型。
1. 两分法
以学习者的最终语言使用的目的和语言环境为主线：英语分为普通语言(EGP)和专门用途英语(ESP)。ESP又可分为职业英语(EOP)和学术英语(EAP)。EAP包括专业学术英语(ESAP)和一般学术英语(EGAP)。
2. 三分法
以学科门类为主线：英语分为普通英语(EGP)和专门用途英语(ESP)。ESP可分为科技英语(EST)、商贸英语(EBE)和社科英语(ESS)。EST包括科技学术英语和科技职业英语。EBE包括商贸学术英语和商贸职业英语。ESS包括社科学术英语和社科专业英语。
三、一般英语和行业英语
1. 两者联系
专门用途英语和一般用途英语都是建立在语言习得理论(language acquisition theories)的基础上;适用于一般用途英语的教学原则同样适用专门用途英语;一般用途英语是专门用途英语的基础;对于基础还不扎实的学生，学基础英语，基础好的学生不应在基本能力方面无休止地操练，应尽快进入专门用途英语课程学习。
2. 两者区别
◆专门用途英语的教学内容与专业和职业更为相关;ESP课程是为对口专业开设的、适用面较广的课程：科技英语、经贸谈判英语、计算机英语，尤其是专业英语技能课程：国际会议英语、报告陈述演示、科技论文写作、文献阅读与检索等。
◆语言学习者对语言学习的需求有所不同。
◆ESP教材不同，内容方面专业性不宜太强，语言上要有代表性，尤其专业方面的常用词汇和一般科技文章的句法结构和表达方式等。
四、专门用途英语教授类型
专门用途的英语教学可以分为四种类型，每个阶段都与语言习得理论或是语言学理论(linguistic theory)密切相关。
第一类型：语域分析（register analysis）和句型练习（sen-tence pattern drill)
不同专业的英语在阐述问题时的语言风格是不一样的，例如：机械英语，人们常常用现在时态和被动语态来描述机械运动的一般规律和结构，很少变换时态;生物英语，由于人们要描述生物演变发展的过程，常常需要变换时态;商务英语，人们常用短句和祈使句。
第二类型：文本和修辞分析法（Text and Rhetoric Analysis)
建立在乔姆期基(Chomsky)提出的语言能力(competence)理论上：人的大脑里本身储存一个语言学习系统，能够理解语言。由于这种语言能力，人们可以理解无限数量的句子，辨认语法错误，理解模糊含义的句子。语言能力不同于语言行为(performance)，潜在人体内部。语言学家试图通过各种训练来使得学生获得语言能力，提高学生的交际能力。
第三类型：情景分析法（situation analysis)
让学生学会在各种不同情况下如何作出适当的反应，不能只学词汇和语法，而是教会学生交际能力。因此应让学生处于不同情景中，学习相关的表达法。以情景分析法为理论基础的教材鼓励学生参加课堂活动;教师在课堂上创造出各种语言情景，教学生使用与情景有关的表达方式。
第四类型：综合使用学习策略（study strategies）和语言技巧（linguistic skills)
教师应能判断学习者的语言掌握程度，并根据学生需求不断调整教学内容和方法。学习是课堂活动的中心，教师在教学过程中应该充分考虑学习者的需求;某些需求是由实际情况决定的。例如：推销员。推销员应该能读懂商业信函，在商品展销会上与客户交谈，向别人解释货物单。
综合上述四种英语学习类型，可以更加灵活地掌握并应用英语知识。
五、学生情况
英语专业学生不仅仅是想学习英语基本知识，而且对不同专业的英语知识也很感兴趣。ESP把基本英语知识和某个特殊用途连接起来，不断吸收时代的新信息，能够满足学生对其它专业知识的要求，受到学生的欢迎。尤其是对于学习特定职业的学生，掌握好这一专业的英语更为重要。
六、师资情况
目前，外语教师对其他学科的相关专业知识缺乏更深、更全面的了解。许多开设ESP课程的高校授课教师大都面临知识结构单一的问题：只会外语而没有专业。多数教师由于受到专业知识的限制，往往沿用讲授基础英语的方法，以词汇和语法教学为主，甚至迷失了自我。产生师资状况形成的原因是由于缺乏激励机制，难以产生动力。师资改善的办法：
◆上岗前接受正式的相关专业的学习和培训。
◆“实战”经验。
◆目前最理想的授课教师是“英语专业出身+相关专业硕/博士学位+实践经验”的组合。
◆通过互联网获得最新资讯和案例。
◆与企业界人士、专业教师沟通交流。

在英语教学中，词汇教学是其他任何方面的英语教学的前提，有效的词汇教学是整个英语有效教学的保证。词汇教学的重要性是毋庸置疑的。可是在传统的词汇教学中，一方面没有给词汇教学足够的重视，另一方面，传统词汇教学法单一，低效，不科学。从而严重的影响了整个英语教学，使得英语教学效率低下。笔者通过多年的教学经验以及实地调研，总结出了一套比较有效且容易操作的词汇教学方法。
在介绍这些方法之前，先简单的分析传统英语词汇教学方法及其弊端：在传统词汇课上，老师会按照课后的词汇表对学生进行词汇教学。从第一个单词开始领读，一直进行到最后一个单词，学生会读后就让学生背词汇表。这种集中教词汇的方法的效率是非常低下的。弊端一： 在没有语境的情况下所习得的单词是很容易被忘掉的。并且学生常常会把单词和它的意义张冠李戴，比如把词汇表中第一个单词和第二个单词的词义混淆了。弊端二：学生只记住了这个单词的汉语意思，但在实际语境中还是不会使用它的。弊端三：加大了学生的记忆负担，致使学生对背单词有恐惧心理，从而丧失了对英语的学习兴趣。弊端四：学生只是大声跟读（chanting），其实脑子里根本没有思考，这样的做法更像体力活动而不是脑力练习。
有效的英语词汇教学法应该遵循一个基本原则，就是在习得词汇时给词汇以特定的语境。只有在特定的语境中，这个词才有固定的意义。例如dedicate这个单词，在没有特定语境的情况下，很难说明这个单词到底是什么意思。但在下列具体的语境中，它的意思是非常明确的。例如：a delicate piece of silk; The body is a delicate machine. a delicate child; Some delicate people don’t like to offend; others don’t like to be offended.
在以上原则下，我们可以通过以下策略，使学生习得英语词汇更加轻松容易，更有效。
第一，通过划分音节记单词。例如contemporary 可以划分成5个音节。Con.tem.po.ra.ry
这种单词记忆法的前提是会读这个单词，然后根据读音拼写出这个单词。
第二，借助直观图形或图像来记单词。例如让学生了解house和room两个单词及其关系。可以通过平面图形让学生指出在一套“house”中有多少个“room”。学生可能会回答有living room， bath room， dinning room等等。在学生学习pyramid时，把金字塔的图片展示给学生看，这做记忆效果会更好。
第三，使用英美国家低年级学生常用的word puzzles 或者crosswords 等填词游戏形式来习得单词。这种形式更适合低年级学生。它体现了“在快乐中学习”的原则。
第四，让学生“头脑风暴（brainstorm）”某个话题的相关词汇。这个方法更适合写作课的前奏。例如老师要求学生写一篇关于“earthquake”的作文，写作之前，老师让学生“brainstorm”尽可能多的相关词汇。学生可能会说：victim， terrible， destroy， rescue， trap，shake， collapse等。但这种策略更适合于复习以前曾经习得过的单词，而不适合习得新单词。
第五，用“单词开花”法记忆单词。这主要是依据三种构词法（派生，合成和转化）记忆单词。;例如由real可以想到really，reality，realistic等等。通过这种策略记单词的效果很好。因为只需记住一个词根，可以在短时间里产生许多其他词。
第六，鼓励学生在课内外经常使用英英词典是增加学生词汇量的有效手段之一。英英词典里用来解释目标词的单词都是英语中最常见最普遍用的词。这些词被称为是英语的“核心词”。大约有4000多个。人们完全可以用这些词进行日常的口语和书面交流。恰好这些词大部分都是高考英语必备词汇。当学生查生词时，每次都是对这些核心词的复习。所以常查英语词典，可以帮助学生习得更多的常用词汇。
第七，用单词造句法。这是一个传统的教单词的方法，但很有效。学生造句，老师点评。这种方法可以提高学生的综合语言运用能力。学生记住了词行，词义，词性，也知道这个单词在不同语境中是如何使用的。它体现的是“learn by using”的原则。
以上这些方法是笔者及同事多年从事英语词汇教学而总结出来的一点经验。希望对广大英语学生及爱好者在习得词汇方面有所帮助。
