Reading the novel is not the first time of my knowing The Joy Luck Club. When I watched the film, the meaning of the title, the theme of the novel, the reason for the arrangement of stories from four mothers and their daughters and other important things were all unknown to me. But I knew that was my type for it is about feelings between mothers and daughters, and especially chinese speaking Eglish.

Amy Tan, a Chinese American writer, is the author of the book in which she explors the mother-daughter relationships. Originally, the relationships between mother and daughter seem to be quite complex in a family but in Amy Tan“s work, it is perfectly typical for its portrayal of conflicts between the traditional Chinese mothers speaking shabby English and the open wholly Americanized daughters who just wear a Chinese face but speak fluent English. I never think it is richly dramatical, and instead these kinds of conflicts, in fact, truly ecists in many Chinese immigrants” family. The novel is written impressively and deeply especially, I think, in understanding of mothers“ love for their daughters for reasons that the previous experience of her with her mother provided the basis for her novel. It is said that the exprience of anthor is similar to that of Jingmei woo. Maybe, the novel implies the deep and complex feelings of auther for her mother and her closest relatives in China.

It gives me a greatly deep impression that the book is begun with Feathers From a Thousand LI Away. It penetrates the mothers” hope and love for their daughters through a swan“s feather. Through the old woman”s words In America I will have a daughter just like me. But over there nobody will say her worth is measured by the loudness of her husband“s belch. Over there nobody will look down on her, because I will make her speak only perfect American English. And over there she will always be too full to swallow any sorrow! She will know my meaning, because I will give her this swana creature that became more than what was hoped for. and the mothers” former tragic sufferings, we will find that all the mothers are in hope of their daughters never suffering from their sufferings. And the mothers waited, year after year, for the day, they could tell their daughters it is their hope through a feather of the swan in perfect American English. At first, it is a little difficult to understand the reason for these words. However, through the whole novel, in fact, you will find the old woman represents the four mothers, the feather of swan embodies the hope of mothers for their daughters. These sentences show implicitly the feelings of author and her understandings for mothers. In fact, in the Joy Luck Club, the feather indeed is gained by Jingmei Woo. And from the beginning to the end,the feather has been existing.

Only if one high-quality novel, like a perfect verse, needs you spending much time reading once more, you will understand something. I thought that the novel is loosely plotted and is in disorder. But the fact verifies that I am wrong. Through the whole story, the novel begins with the death of Jingmei“s mother and ends in Jingmei visiting China to see the twin-half sisters whom her mother had been forced to abandon when the Japanese attacked China many years ago. What”s more, in detail, the stories of four mothers and four daughters have relative connections in theme about love between them and the mothers“ hope for their daughters. And the theme shows the comflicts and harmonization between different cultures. Then I think why the author titled the novel Joy Luck Club . I am puzzled by it and the purpose of writer. The name of club made mention of by Jingmei”s mother. And the author directly titling the novel the name of their meeting implies her feelings for her mother. I can guess that the title originated from a kind of hope or belief. According to mothers“ former sufferings, they were not happy. Even at the present, all of them hides the previous tragic experiences. Maybe, the club is a place where they can pretend to be happy or avoid the past memory or worries or even the shock of culture.

Reading the novel is as we are reading our life and then think our past, present and futere. Especially, the conflict between Waverly Jang and her mother impresses me most. Waverly is a woman who is quite independent-mined and intelligent, but her mother”s constant criticism is terribly annoying. She once had a gift for international chess.however, when she realized her mother taking advantage of her achievement and talent to show off in public, especially to the strangers, she felt terribly ashamed and annoyed. She shouted to you can not make me . From then on, her mother felt cold at Waverly and were particularabout her favorite things. In fact, I think Waverly felt sacred subconsciously at letting her mother down and something that she did was aimed at flattering her mother. When waverly brought her boyfriend, Rich, to her families, her mother just smiled but she still was particular about Rich“s appearance, having many spots on his face. Description about the conflicts of manners between Chinese tradition and American notions has given me a greatly deep impression and quite interesting. These words of And then he had helped himself to big portions of the shrimp and snow peas, not realizing he should have taken only a polite spoonful, until everybody had had a morsel. vividly express the American character of being casual which counts as discourtesy in China. The part of Rich criticizing her mother”s cooking is quite funny and impressive. Our Chinese habit of making disparaging remarks seems to be extremely common. Being modest and avoiding showing off are parts of Chinese traditional manners. Her mother complaining about This dish not salty enough, no flavor , in fact, was a cue to eat some and proclaim it it the best she had ever made. But the Rich did not understand. From the following description of her mother being horrified, I judged that her mother was bly objective against Rich and even their marriage. Waverly also had such an opinion. But I am wrong and from their conversation I understand something more important. Mother is the only one that understands their daughters or sons in the world. And none of the mothers do not love their children. And the heaty conversattion can make a b bridge between the different generation or even the peonple from the different cultures. I find that if you would not like to tell your hearty words out, others are not able to know what you are and what you think. People each have different opinions about the same things. Waverly had thought that her mother disapproved of her marriage and hated her Rich. However, her mother“s meaningful words surprised Waverly and even me. Just be particular about who I really care for and love. It occured to me that whoever we hurt is always who we really love for reasons that others would not care for our complaint. Yes, who will care for those who you do not love ? The answer is known by us fron the beginning to the end. It is the love for Waverly that her mother has been showing her. Waverly, a wholly Americanized girl, never trully knew her mother and was ignorant of the love for her. Indeed, the language and the culture did make a great difference in the exchange of feelings, which is a terribly high barrier between Waverly and her mother, also between other three mothers and their daughters. But love and understandings, finally will prevail over others.

Personally, through the whole novel, the conflict between mothers and daughters, virtually, is that of the cultures between the East and the West. Mothers represent the classic, traditional Chinese culture but the daughters are the symbol of just, free, open and modern American one, which are two kinds of contradictory elements. However, through the whole novel, it is easier to find that finally they can understand each other and be in harmony. When Jing-Mei saw her twin-half sisters, she was surprised at this kind of familiarity. And now I also see what part of me is Chinese. It is so obvious. It is my family. It is in our blood. After all these years, it can finally be let go. shows that Jing-Mei understood her mother”s stubbornness and love and was struck by mother“s greatness. The resolution of the contradiction shows that the cultures of the East and the West can be in harmony with each other.

My Reflection of The Joy Luck Club

I wonder that when seeing the name The Joy Luck Club most people would treat it as a story filled with happiness and love.In fact, besides love, it is also about the cultural conflicts between four daughters and their mothers. The film is based on the best seller by Amy Tan of the same name.It shows us the lives of four Chinese women who were immigrants to America during the 1950s.As a mother, each of them has a lot of problems with their daughter because of cultural conflicts. The misunderstanding of love between the mothers and their American-raised daughters, the clash between the generations and cultures, and the struggle for the women to fight for equity touch every audience’s heart.Though I was also attracted by something with extensiveness——I want to talk about some points about the language.I had learnt that what are high context communication and low context communication and what is different between them. The former is one in which most of the information is internalized in a person, while very little in the coded, explicit, transmitted part of the message——we must guess what the real meaning of the words is;while the other is the opposite.Chinese just the stands for the former and English is the representative of the latter. An interesting scene in the movie just shows us this. When Waverly’s boyfriend Richie had a dinner with Waverly’s big Chinese family for the first time, he made some stupid mistakes. He brought his typical American habit when the they were eating and he couldn’t understand what Lindo(Waverly’s mother)mean when she said “ He has an appetite”.When Lindo brought a dish which she was very proud of, as a Chinese, she still said some formulae that the dish was not salty enough and it was too bad to eat;that suggested that everyone around the table should speak highly of her dish after their first degustation;while Richie didn’t understand that Chinese all like to be modest and he criticized Lindo’s cooking, just saying what he thought in his mind directly. What Richie did led to a very embarrassing atmosphere in the dinner and made Lindo very disappointed and

disgraced. The misunderstanding of a different culture and a different language is the mainly reason causing the awkward occasion. If Richie had known what he had faced with was a group of people with different culture and saying a high context language, and had done some preparation for that different traditional Chinese dinner, he could have avoid to making so many foolish mistake. To understand what a Chinese mean you could not just follow the superficial message transmitted by his words, instead, you should connect those words to his cultural background and the situation you are in.By appreciating the movie we could realize the culture of a people from their language. In this movie the cultural conflicts between the mothers’ traditional Chinese concept and the daughters’ up-to-date American concept are fully described by their dialogues and soliloquies. In conclusion, a language is really the mirror of a culture;and if we want to understand the marrow of a culture we could appreciate its language.

Published in 1989,Amy Tan's first novel The Joy Luck Club is a popular and critical sensation which successfully depicts the intricate mother-daughter relationship under the crossculture background. However, the success of this novel should not only be attributed to its vivid depiction of mother-daughte relationship but also to its innovative narrative strategy which has ideological function from the feminist narratology perspective.Instead of telling a whole story in one major plot, sixteen"her stories"revolving around the integral theme of mother-daughter relationship are narrated from multiple voices of Chinese mothers and their American born daughters without a clear plot at all Through the unusual narrative voice,Amy Tan further reveals the struggle of double marginalized overseas Chinese women to find their own identity and face the ethic self.

2 Two Different Perceptions of"Voice"

In traditional study of narratology, the term of"voice"refers to the narrator or teller in the novel as a formalistic structure irrelevant with the political or social context. However, the feminis views"voice"as the actual or fictional actions from one particular person or a community who represents the perceptions centered on women. Thus, the term of"voice"has become a symbo of identity and power. As Luce Irigaray says, there is a"voix"(voice),there is a"voie"(way).[1]Traditionally,the feminist criticism never touches upon the narrative devices. However,Lanse points out that"the narrative voice as a narrative device is no only the product of ideology but also the ideology itself."[2]As a representative of feminist narratology,Lanser for the first time connects the narrative device with the social and political context so as to better understand women writers'works. She points out that women's narrative voice is actually the field of ideological struggle which is expressed in and between the texts.

3.1 Communal Narrative Voice

The Joy Luck Club is said to be a challenge to narrative norm in which the most distinguished narrative form is its multiple narrative voices.Normally, there is only one narrative voice in a novel to narrate a whole story. However,in Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club, there are seven narrators:three Chinese mothers and four American born daughters taking turns to tell stories This is a typical case of communal narrative voice which"refers to a kind of narration in which a community is bestowed with the narrative authority realized by multiple narrative voices."[3]According to Lanser,It is the communal narrative voice that is normally employed by the marginalized and suppressed community in the society. Thus,it often carries with political and ideological significance.

As overseas Chinese women, mothers and daughters are marginalized from the main culture and the other powerful gender. As the"Other"in the society of America, both mothers and daughters in the double marginalized place lost the"voice"Mothers lost their courage to face the past and they don't dare to mention it to their daughters, while daughters, being afraid to identify themselves with their mothers, lost their courage to face with the ethnic self. However, through the communal narrative voice Amy Tan let them sequentially voice out their true emotions and feelings, their sorrow and happiness. These monologues actually serve significantly as inner dialogues between mothers and daughters so that they can know each other deeper and better. As Gloria Shen argues, the sharing of cultural experiences between mothers and daughters through the device of storytelling transforms structurally isolated monologues into meaningful dialogues between mother and mother.[4]

On deeper level,by depicting the intricate bonding between mothers and daughter,Amy Tan is actually reproaching the American hegemonic culture and the patriarchal society which suppress the overseas Chinese women. In America, overseas Chinese women often face with problems of race, gender and culture The representative example is the marriage of Rose who marries an American Ted.From the beginning,Rose considers herself inferior to Ted and she even enjoys this kind of feeling as a weak party."I was always in danger and he was always rescuing me.would fall and he would lift me up.It was exhilarating and draining. The emotional effect of saving and being saved was addicting to both of us."[5]This kind of distorted feeling reflects wel Rose's uncertainty about her identity as an overseas Chinese woman, which finally arouses Ted's dislike and suggestion of divorce. In this vital situation Rose mother An-mei encourages he daughter to speak out for herself by telling Rose her own story back in China about how she fights against the patriarchal repression.An-mei's story gives the courage to her daughter. She shocked Ted by saying bravely"you can't just pull me out o your life and throw me away."Rose powerful voice saves he marriage at the end, which symbolizes the self-assertion abou her ethnic self. Thus, the communal narrative voice by mothers and daughters plays like the polyphonic music strongly and powerfully to resist the double repressed situation overseas Chinese women faced with in America.

3.2 The Narrative Voice of Mothers

The establishment of narrative authority in this novel is especially reflected by the narrative voice of mothers who are normally silent. In the novel, mothers have the opportunity to express their feelings and emotions by their own voices.Compared with American born daughters,Chinese mothers actually are more marginalized than their daughters. They have a very hard life back in China before coming to America. When living in America as aged mothers who cannot speak fluent English, they are often misunderstood and even seen through colored glasses by their own daughters.Their daughters think them stupid when seeing their mothers explain things in fractured English. The conflict between mothers and daughters is actually the conflic between two different cultures. As Pu Ruoqian argues,"the image of mother symbolizes the traditional Chinese culture while the image of daughter is an epitome of American culture".[6]However Chinese mothers still love their American born daughters unconditionally. They choose to swallow their sorrow in front of their daughters keeping their misery past in secret. But it turns out that their daughters are as ignorant as they were young back in China where they were taught not to speak.Mothers finally bravely voice out their past so as to let their daughters know that they should choose for their own lives and speak out for themselves. In the fourth section,When Rose's mother An-mei is told by her daughter that her marriage is falling apart, she tells her own story to her daughter."You do not need a psychiatrist to do this.A psychiatrist does not want you to wake up…he is just another bird drinking from your misery."[7]Through mother's encouragement,An-mei wants to instill in her daughter a strong sense of self as Rose is a traditionally passive individual.Encouraged by mother An-mei,Rose finally saves the marriage with Ted finding her own voice.

4 Conclusion

From the perspective of feminist narratology, the narrative voice especially in women's works should not be only deemed as a formalistic structure of a novel but also as a device to reflect deeply the ideological struggle of gender, race and culture which women are often involved in.Through the unusual narrative voice, mothers and daughters produce a better understanding towards each other, and finally find their own"voice".The narrative form here carries with great ideological and political function. Thus,Amy Tan further establishes the narrative authority of female narrators for the marginalized overseas Chinese women in a cross culture background.

The Expression of Love

——Book Review on The Joy Luck Club “The Joy Luck Club” is the story about the four central pairs of Chinese immigrant mothers and daughters born in America: Suyuan Woo and Jing-mei “June” Woo, An-mei Hsu and Rose Hsu Jordan, Lindo Jong and Waverly Jong, and Ying-ying St.Clair and Lena St.Clair.The novel shows us conflicts between mothers’ hopes and daughters’ disobedience and rebellion. The conflicts and misunderstanding may result from the generation gap and cultural difference, however, in my point of view, what rigidifies their relationship is the way of expressing love.It is no doubt that the mothers and the daughters love each other deeply and mothers spare no effort to give daughters everything they could provide. From mothers’ perspective, they hope daughters a brighter further and full of promises. So they express their love by planning daughters’ blueprints and then impose their will on daughters and force them to walk their scheduled path. And for daughters, especially those live in an American, they struggle for individual freedom and wish to live their own way.Due to schemed future, they cannot accurately make a definition for their identities.Under this condition, criticism form mothers and rebellion for daughters become how they express love.In this way, love becomes a heavy burden for both of them.Mothers and daughters need to express their love in the right way.So empathy and effective communications is of great importance.Mothers should show their love according to their daughters’ interest or at least make them know why they make the choice for them.Fortunately, the novel ends up with the reunion of mothers and the daughters. It is evident that due to mothers’ telling frank stories and daughters’ patient hearing, soul communication has happened among them. They perceive the deep love form each other. So expression of love is significant and remarkable. The novel teaches us how to express our love and is worth reading.
