Google, the Internet search-engine company, has announced it will give more than twenty-five million dollars in money and investments to help the poor. The company says the effort involves using the power of information and technology to help people improve their lives.

Aleem Walji works for Google.org -- the part of the company that gives money to good causes. He said the company’s first project will help identify where

infectious (传染性的) diseases are developing. In Southeast Asia and Africa, for example, Google.org will work with partners to strengthen early-warning systems and take action against growing health threats.

Google.org’s second project will invest in ways to help small and medium-sized businesses grow. Walji says microfinance (小额信贷) is generally small, short-term loans that create few jobs. Instead, he says Google.org wants to develop ways to bring investors and business owners together to create jobs and improve economic growth.

Google.org will also give money to help two climate-change programs announced earlier this year. One of these programs studies ways to make renewable (再生的) energy less costly than coal-based energy. The other is examining the efforts being made to increase the use of electric cars.

The creators of Google have promised to give Google.org about one percent of company profits and one percent of its total stock value every year. Aleem Walji says this amount may increase in the future.

36. The purpose of Google’s investments is to ________.

B) develop new technology

C) expand its own business

D) increase the power of information

37. According to Aleem Walji, the company’s first project is to ________.

C) the company’s own interests

D) local commercial banks

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45.

Your boss holds your future prospects in his hands. Some bosses are hard to get along with. Some have excellent qualifications but no idea when it comes to dealing with people. Of course, not all bosses are like that.

The relationship you have with your boss can be a major factor in determining your rise up the career ladder. Your boss is not only your leader, he is also the person best equipped to help you do the job you are paid to do. He can inform you of company direction that may affect your professional development.

Your boss also needs you to perform at your best in order to accomplish his objectives. He needs your feedback in order to provide realistic and useful reports to upper management. But how does this help you establish a meaningful working relationship with your boss?

The key is communication. Learn and understand his goals and priorities Observe and understand your boss’s work style. If he has not been clear with his expectations, ask! Likewise, ask for feedback and accept criticism gracefully. And if he understands that you do not view your job as just something to fill the hours between 9 and 5, he may be more likely to help you.

In short, getting along with your boss requires getting to know his likes and dislikes and learning to work with his personality and management style.

41. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.

A) bosses are hard to deal with

B) bosses have good character

C) bosses determine your career future

D) bosses must have similar personality

42. In the second paragraph, “rise up the career ladder” (Line 2) means ________.

A) going to work abroad

B) changing jobs frequently

C) being promoted in position

D) pursuing an advanced degree

43. In order to achieve his objectives, your boss expects that you will ________.

A) do your best in your work

B) show your management skills

C) get along with your colleagues

D) write reports to upper management

44. The most important factor for establishing a good working relationship with the boss is ________.

A) high expectations

B) quick feedback

C) frequent criticism

D) effective communication

45. The best title for the passage might be ________.

A) How to Take Care Of Your Boss.

Cells in the green leaves of plants work like tiny factories to convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into sugars and starches, stored energy that the plants can use. This conversion process is called photosynthesis. Unfortunately, unless you’re a plant, it’s difficult and expensive to convert sunlight into storable energy. That’s why scientists are taking a closer look at exactly how plants do it.

Some scientists are trying to get plants, or biological cells that act like plants, to work as miniature photosynthetic power stations. For example, Maria Ghirardi of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., is working with green algae. She’s trying to trick them into producing hydrogen instead of sugars when they perform photosynthesis. Once the researchers can get the algae working efficiently, the hydrogen that they produce could be used to power fuel cells in cars or to generate electricity.

The algae are grown in narrow-necked glass bottles to produce hydrogen in the lab. During photosynthesis, plants normally make sugars or starches. “But under certain conditions, a lot of algae are able to use the sunlight energy not to store starch, but to make hydrogen.” Ghirardi says. For example, algae will produce hydrogen in an airfree environment. It’s the oxygen in the air that prevents algae from making hydrogen most of the time.

Working in an airfree environment, however, is difficult. It’s not a practical way to produce cheap energy. But Ghirardi and her colleagues have discovered that by removing a chemical called sulfate from the environment that the algae grow in, they will make hydrogen instead of sugars, even when air is present.

Unfortunately, removing the sulfate also makes the algae’s cells work very slowly, and not much hydrogen is produced. Still, the researchers see this as a first step in their goal to produce hydrogen efficiently from algae. With more work, they may be able to speed the cells’ activity and produce larger quantities of hydrogen.

The researchers hope that algae will one day be an easy-to-use fuel source. The organisms are cheap to get and to feed, Ghirardi says, and they can grow almost anywhere: “You can grow them in a reactor, in a pond. You can grow them in the ocean. There’s a lot of flexibility in how you can use these organisms.”

36.How do plants relate to solar energy?

A.They are the real experts in producing it.

B.They have been a source of it.

C.They have been used to produce it.

D.They have been using it for billions of years.

37.Scientists study how photosynthesis works because they want to

A.improve the efficiency of it.

B.turn plant sugars to a new form of energy.

C.make green plants a new source of energy.

D.get more sugars and starches from plants.

38.Algae are able to use solar energy to produce hydrogen when

A.they are grown in narrow-necked bottles.

B.there is enough oxygen in the air.

C.enough starch is stored.

D.there is no oxygen in the air.

39.Researchers find it difficult to make algae produce hydrogen efficiently because

A.removing the sulfate slows down the hydrogen production.

B.It is hard to create an airfree environment.

C.It is expensive to remove the sulfate from the environment.

D.the algae’s cells work slowly if there is no oxygen in the air.

40.What does Ghirardi say about algae?

A.They grow faster in a reactor.

B.They will be planted everywhere.

C.They are cheap to eat.

(1) The sales service includes installation and training within one week of receiving the order. (2008.6.65)

(2) We are looking forward to your early reply. (2006.6.65)

(3) ...enables the tourist to travel free on the buses, trains... (2003.12.65)

(4) Scientists are eager to talk with other scientists working on similar problems. (2003.6.61)

(1) There is no way we’ll get lost in the mountains, since the tour guide has figured out the return route. (2008.6.62)

(2) If you are not satisfied with any aspect of the service we provide or feel you have been treaded unfairly, ... (2002.12.65)

(1) If you are taking care of an aging parent or know someone who is, this 30-page booklet may be of great help to you. (2007.6.61)

(2) You can buy a three-year old car for only 60%of the price for a new vehicle and still have 3 years of trouble-free driving. (2005.12.62)

(1) All twenty facilities will be linked by a satellite broadcasting. (2007.6.65)

(2) You must sign to accept the terms and conditions as the application will only be processed with the applicant’s signature. (2006.6.64)

(1) Bidding documents can be obtained at the following address upon receipt of a non-refundable payment of RMB¥2郯799each set. (2007.6.64)

(2) The author suggests that human resources management should be taught as a required subject in school, along with science courses. (2005.6.64)

(1) No one can use cell phone in any areas at the hospital where equipment might be affected by the interference from cell phone. (2003.12.61)

(1) With all its disadvantages, the new design they have submitted should still be considered as one of the best at present. (2008.6.63)

(2) ...but suits with kitchens are also available for families who would rather prepare their own meals. (2005.6.65)

(3) ...apply at British mission in the country where you are living... (2005.1.65)

(4) This book is divided sixteen units that deal with tropics of everyday conversation. (2001.6.63)

例如,在Text 2第二段的开头有这样一句话:“California has asked the justices to refrain from a sweeping ruling, particularly one that upsets the old assumption that authorities may search through the possessions of suspects at the time of their arrest.”

1 Which of the following is shown to be odd, according to Paragraph 4? (Text 1 Question 23)

A. Aristocrats’ excessive reliance on inherited wealth.

B. The role of the nobility in modern democracies.

C. The simple lifestyle of the aristocratic families.

D. The nobility’s adherence to their privileges.

解析:根据题干中的关键词odd (奇怪的),考生可将答案信息定位至原文第四段第三句的后半部分:“... it is bizarre that wealthy aristocratic families should still be the symbolic heart of modern democratic states.”

2 The author believes that exploring one’s phone content is comparable to (Text 2 Question 28)

A. getting into one’s residence.

B. handling one’s historical records.

C. scanning one’s correspondences.

D. going through one’s wallet.

解析:这道题问的是搜查个人手机内容相当于什么,题干中的关键信息exploring one’s phone content在原文第四段出现了两次,分别是第一句的“They should start by discarding California’s lame argument that exploring the contents of a smart phone ... is similar to, say, rifling through a suspect’s purse”和第三句的“But exploring one’s smart phone is more like entering his or her home”。

3 David Vaux holds that what Science is doing now (Text 3 Question 34)

A. adds to researchers’ workload.

B. diminishes the role of reviewers.

C. has room for further improvement.

D. is to fail in the foreseeable future.

考生可以根据人名将相关信息定位至原文第六段:“Vaux says that Science’s idea to pass some papers to statisticians “has some merit, but a weakness is that it relies on the Board of Reviewing Editors to identify ‘the papers that need scrutiny’ in the first place.””

4 The phrase “flagged up” (Para. 2) is the closest in meaning to (Text 3 Question 32)

A. found.

B. revised.

C. marked.

D. stored.

解析:短语flagged up出现在原文第二段:“Working with the American Statistical Association, the journal has appointed seven experts to a Statistics Board of Reviewing Editors (SBoRE). Manuscript will be flagged up for additional scrutiny by the journal’s internal editors, or by its existing Board of Reviewing Editors or by outside peer reviewers.”

5 Which of the following is the best title of the text? (Text 3 Question 35)

A. Science Joins Push to Screen Statistics in Papers

B. Professional Statisticians Deserve More Respect

C. Data Analysis Finds Its Way onto Editors’ Desks

D. Statisticians Are Coming Back with Science

由于文章为“总—分”结构,全文主旨已在总起段明确点出,因此,考生可以根据第一段的主题句“The journal Science is adding an extra round of statistical checks to its peer-review process”判断选项A为正确答案。

6 The author’s attitude toward California’s argument is one of (Text 2 Question 27)

A. tolerance.

B. indifference.

C. disapproval.

D. cautiousness.

解析:这道题所对应的原文信息是“The court would be recklessly modest if it followed California’s advice”和“They should start by discarding California’s lame argument that …”。

A Gold Medal’s Worth in China

共计65道客观题组成。总分:100分.第一部分:词汇选项——15题15分;

第五部分:补全短文——5题10分;

1、词汇选项(职称英语考试允许带一本纸质词典);

理工类;真题中与课本一样的为第13篇 better solar engery system:more heat,more bright。

adbda,caccb,cadbb。
