语言是社会的产物, 是人们日常交流的工具。语言只有在运用中才能真正习得。然而在英语教学过程中, 教育工作者们往往重视对语言知识的教授, 而忽略对语言能力的培养。2007年教育部颁布的《大学英语课程教学要求》提出:“大学英语的教学目标是培养学生的英语综合应用能力, 特别是听说能力, 同时增强其自主学习能力, 提高综合文化素养;在课程方面, 大学英语课程的设计应充分考虑听说能力培养的要求, 使用先进的信息技术, 开发和建设各种基于计算机网络的课程, 为学生提供良好的语言学习环境与条件。” (教育部高等教育司) 而如何将学生语言能力的培养具体落实到英语听说课中却仍是大多数老师思考的的问题。翻转课堂, 作为现代教育技术下的新型教学模式, 以其独特的特点和优势, 为大学英语听说课的教学提供了新的思路和见解。

1翻转课堂概述

(1) 翻转课堂的产生背景

翻转课堂, 最早是在2007年由美国林地公园高中的两位化学老师乔纳森•伯格曼 (Jonathan Bergmann) 和亚伦•萨姆斯 (Aaron Sams) 提出。这两位老师最开始录制微视频的目的是为了帮助缺课的学生补上未学的课程, 但后来他们发现这种模式同样适用于其他的学生, 而且可以提高教学效率和教学效果。随后这一教学模式在美国受到了越来越多学校的效仿。然而翻转课堂真正在全球范围内推广则要归功于美国可汗学院的创始人萨尔曼•可汗 (Salman Khan) 。2011年萨尔曼•可汗在TED (Technology Entertainment Design) 大会上做的题为《让我们用视频重塑教育》的演讲, 使得翻转课堂这一概念获得世界各国教育工作者的尝试和推广。

翻转课堂自提出以来, 国外实施得比较好的有美国科罗拉多州林地公园高中、美国加州河畔联合学区以及加拿大萨斯喀彻温省穆斯乔的草原南高中。国内则有重庆聚奎中学、深圳南山实验教育集团以及山东昌乐一中等等。通过对这些学校的实施情况的分析, 我们可以发现这些学校的翻转课堂的实施基本上都包括以下两个环节:1课前学习环节:教师根据教学目标制作或选取短小精悍涵盖主要知识点的微视频, 学生利用互联网或学习平台观看视频, 完成老师布置的学习任务单以及知识的学习。2课堂活动环节:首先针对课前学习中出现的问题, 师生一起答疑解惑;之后教师根据学生的实际情况, 设计各种紧贴教学目标、符合教学内容的学习任务, 学生依据任务的难易以个人或小组的形式通过口头汇报表演、情景对话等方式完成任务, 实现知识的内化。

(1) 课前学习环节

《全新版大学英语听说教程》Unit2的主题是Food and Drinks。其听的方面的语言技能目标是能够听懂有关饮食用餐的对话;说的方面是能够用英语进行关于点餐, 上菜, 结账等饮食用餐话题的日常交流。 (虞苏美、李慧琴, 2013) 教师根据教学目标和教学重难点, 精心设计了一段15分钟左右的微视频。微视频包括三个部分:第一部分, 饮食用餐分类词汇百宝箱;第二部分, 两段关于外出用餐时的听力材料;第三部分, 关于中式餐厅、西式餐厅以及学校食堂用餐时的三段情景口语视频。

老师依据学生课前任务单的完成情况进行评价, 对于完成得好的同学给予表扬。然后, 根据不同学生补充的相关词汇, 课堂上师生一起将百宝箱补充完整, 加深学生对相关词汇的记忆。第二, 针对学生们课前学习中的主要问题, 师生一起探讨解决。个别同学如若仍有不懂, 则可以单独向老师同学请教, 做到个性化教学。

2小组听力竞赛

老师课堂上放一段和本课时主题一致, 但难度略微高于课前微视频听力内容的材料, 同学听写出其文本, 并且以小组形式一起补充完整。通过这段材料的听写检测学生对知识的掌握情况, 并且以小组竞赛的形式组织教学, 既培养了学生的合作竞争意识, 同时也有利于调动学生们的学习积极性。

3情景对话表演

学生在老师设定的中式餐厅、西式餐厅以及学校食堂三个场景中随机选择一个, 以小组的形式编写对话进行情景表演。老师和其他小组的同学给予点评。情景对话表演的方式给学生提供了更多的口语输出机会, 有利于其口语表达能力的提高, 同时用英语去说去表演, 也有利于学生知识的内化。

3总结

综上所述, 翻转课堂教学模式在大学英语听说课中的运用有其独特的优势。首先, 课前微视频教学和任务单的完成过程有利于学生自主学习能力的培养;其次, 学生可以根据自己的情况掌握学习进度及时间, 可以反复观看视频, 以及随时和同学老师进行在线交流, 教学更具人性化和个性化;再次, 课堂活动形式有利于学生团队合作精神和竞争意识的提高, 给学生提供了更多的口语输出机会, 有助于学生知识的内化;最后, 翻转课堂中, 学生由传统的被动学习转变为和同学老师一起主动建构学习, 提高了教学效率和教学质量。

翻转课堂教学模式虽然有其巨大的教学优势, 但也存在许多问题, 如教学设备的普及、学生自主学习效果的保证以及教师传统教学观念的转变和教学技术的提高, 也都有待于我们进一步的研究和解决。

终于我感觉我确实学到了一些东西,也融入了学校。不管怎么样,我感觉我即将毕业。我开始对思考的过程轻车熟路,懂得了谨慎地去思考,学会了总结,也学会了为我说出的话辩护。

在过去我曾通过用枯燥的方式说话取得一些进步,不管你谈论辩论或者演讲术,你都演说似的说个不完,即使在辩论中那是很陈腐的,因为你有演讲稿,一个对任何由反对者提出的问题的响应。这种方式这样被安排以至于没有机会自由思考(我从来没有让我的想法被挑战或质疑),但我不能再大言不惭地演说并让那些话通过推理被错误的接受。因为在波士顿大学法律学院不需要一个这样的演说家,你不得不思考,阅读,理解并且推理。我在21岁时学会这样一个事实:你不能说一件事情只是这样因为它可能不是这样,总会有更辉煌,更聪明,更懂得思考的人出现告诉你并不是那样,那时,如果你仍认为是之前的那样,你就不得不改变它了,那么,对我来说这是一个新事物,我想:我最后会有所启发的。

幸运常在(Lots of Luck)

民间俗语极力鼓吹运气是生活很重要的一部分。一句德国谚语翻译过来是“最笨的农民种出最大的土豆”。还有一些其他的比如“一些人会掉入大量垃圾中但仍然笑得像玫瑰一样”和“价值是你在哪里找到它”。据推测,有一些幸运数字,比如7和11在骰子游戏中(看它在什么时候出现),同样有不幸运的数字比如13,会让人联想到有13个部分的绞刑架,有好多酒店,像芝加哥的Palmer House,甚至不做13级的台阶,直接做12或者14级,尽管真正迷信的人不会在这样的行为上犯错误。

追踪这个踪迹,当一个人在马术比赛中打赌那匹马会赢,胜率在100到1都有可能在比赛结束之前,我们说打赌者是幸运的,又一次做这样的打赌,少数人会承认它,但我们会有意象认为我们只是运气,这种情况并不普遍。比如说,一个人正处于严重的事故中,他认为自己很幸运没有死掉。如果我们仔细想一想,他一定是首先在事故中不幸。

有时我们用高级词汇如“意外的发现”来描述运气,它的来源则更多来源于想象超过现实。这个词是一个对Horace Walpole的书《锡兰三王子》的模仿。纯属巧合,王子们因为他们的努力而幸运。

运气垂青那些提供机会让它们发生的人吗?Lee.Trevino,与Jack Nicklaus和Arnold Palmer一起让高尔夫这项运动更流行,他常常说:“我练习地越多,我就越幸运。”

你有新邮件(You’ve Got Mail)

耐心,是诺贝尔精神的一种,当今却不再流行,所以,接下来我们信件的模式不得不适应这些变化,一个这些变化的明显的特征就是E-mail的使用,一种为实用的目的所创造的系统,不仅减少了交流中纸张的使用,而且有效减少了办公室的电话留言。但是,这种系统现在也是我们个人生活中的一部分,所以这值得做一些调查。我们停下一小会儿,来想一想我们对E-mail增加的信心怎样影响了我们,这是值得而且必要的,因为E-mail对写信交流和新层次的亲密关系意味着很多,尽管它被许多特殊的推崇传统写作交流的角色扔进一个阴影里。永久性和暂时性:这两个词描述了新模式和旧模式的最基本的不同。比如说,想想垃圾邮件,在虚拟世界处理它可能会更令人满足。只需一个按钮那些不想要的邮件就像蒸发一样不见了,反之,摆脱一些真实的信件可能会增加内疚感-----这条原因就是没有意义。然而,一个更重要的区别应该被提及,那就是对读者的承诺的可信程度,E-mail和信件的对比,相比于屏幕和读者,信件和读者之间的交流程度更强,信件有更强的感染力。一个信封证实着一封信,即写作这个动作的本身,是永恒的,在这个世界上占有一定位臵的。信件往往伴随着邮票证明着它有真实的发源地,比如旧金山,加利福尼亚或者皮奥里亚,伊利诺伊州。每封信都有它自己的整体,每封信都被它完备的,独立的包裹所包装。或许信笺有个人的特色,或许它带着像发送者身上一样的香味。手写的单词也有书写者独特的东西。最后,最厉害最有特色的书写者会有信件的DNA,就是发送者在封条上的唾液。

但我不总是感觉这样的有希望和乐观有关Email,我过去常常分享传播我工作的数据和我个人的生活,就像我有一个真的信箱在家,在工作时也有。我有这样的印象即Email对我工作中的日常事务都很有帮助。比如说,公寓的协调者会发短讯来调查什么时候我们能举行我们下一次的社区会议:“回复你认为合适的时间举行下次会议,谢谢”,没有繁琐的礼貌细节,没有闲话,只是大概交流的内容,对于麻烦的,单调乏味的社区管理工作很适合,但涉及到个人信息,它是正确的媒介吗?从朋友和家庭的亲密接触角度来深思熟虑?我开始觉得是可以的,E-mail有哪些潜在的价值可以提高我们的个人生活水准?Email交流的自发性和人机对话的质量很可能对我们个人关系有积极作用,如果没有更多,那就像信件了。

很惬意的说我能查看我的邮件在下午七点,用一些时间来考虑它,在凌晨两点回复这些邮件,然后在第二天下午接到回复,除了方便,派对的变换也会保持新鲜感,就像电话通信一样,或者更好,因为有更多的时间深思熟虑有关措辞,如果你对于电话里对你同伴说的词觉得不妥,你能很快的回复一封邮件来避免在夜晚打扰他,电脑屏幕提供了距离感,可以表达情绪的缓冲,可以不用担心说错话或者造成尴尬的局面。你能很随意的,故意的,不像面对面交流那样。写作给了你那样的机会,Email你能马上得到一段对话的效果,但你也有机会密切注视和描述你想表达的和倾听者即将记住的。

不像说出来的文字转瞬即逝,写下来的文字是持久的,你可以反复看它来发现交流的内容而不是猜测刚刚说了什么,好的书写,会没有错误同时清晰真诚,完全取决于你所选的被安排好的词语和优雅的句式,打字亦或手写,都是永恒的,如果你能用笔创造一种迷人的声音,那么这种声音一定会表现在网络空间里。回头看开头的引语,我能看到维特根斯坦(电影)肯定了一些东西,语言的一个主要的功能就是创造更多的选择,更多途径来描述,更多途径来解决问题,更多途径来发展我们扩展的意识,换言之,语言会远离“限制”,无论限制在固定的个性或者把电子邮件通过一个混乱的规则分类,语言—单词,构成了你本身全部的参数。我们不能没有根据的更改概念或者意思。词汇我们与其他人的协定,确立意义的位臵,和我们存在的意义的载体。所以怎样传输写出来的语言是否极其重要?不那么重要,重要的是写作者是否能清晰,真诚,同时优雅交流的能力。我们没必要在手写和电脑之间做选择,事实上,有更多的媒介来迎接许多挑战才是有力的慰藉。

礼貌:快乐世界的关键词(Key to a Happier World)

许多年前,试图帮助遇到各种困难的人让我坚定了一个信念:也许事后困难可以被克服,或者不会发生,如果被牵涉的人们能以正常的礼貌对待他人。礼貌,有礼貌,都是好的礼节,你可以这样说,供给的似乎永远满足不了像要。“我丈夫说的没有这么多”,一个哭泣的妻子倾诉,“像他说话的语气,为什么像一定不得不对我吼?”“我讨厌我的老板”一个有不开心表情的职员小声抱怨道。“他不会对任何东西表露赞赏之情”。“我们所得到的都是我们积极志愿得到的”。一对厌烦的父母说“那很难过”。这样的抱怨不仅仅存在于我学习中遇到的人们,到处的人们都渴望被礼貌对待。“好的礼节,”Ralph Waldo Emerson说,“是做事情的愉快方式”。反过来也完全正确。不好的礼节可以毁了一整天,或者一个周,或者一段友情。好的理礼节的基本要素是什么?当然是一种公平的感觉,礼貌通常不仅仅是一种高度发展的关于公平感觉的游戏。一个朋友一次告诉我他开车行驶在一条单行道上,还未铺砌的山路,前面是另一辆喷着令人窒息的烟雾的车,还有很长一段路才能到最近的高速公路,突然,在一个宽阔的地方,前面的车刹车了,朋友想车主一定是感觉发动机出了问题,我的朋友停下来询问出了什么事吗,“没有”,那个司机说,“但是你已经容忍了这么久我制造的尘土,接下来的路让我跟在你后面吧”。这是一个有礼貌的人,这是一个天生就有教养的角色。

另一个礼貌的要素是共鸣,这是一种让人们完全理解他人的心思和心情,理解他们的痛苦和难过并且能帮助他们将痛苦减少到最低程度的能力。最近有一本书关于一个出名的饭店连锁店有这样的一段故事。

一个人独自吃晚饭,他想拧开一瓶番茄酱但是他的手指因为关节炎至伤残以至于他不能打开,他请求餐馆的服务生帮忙,那男孩拿过瓶子,转过身去一小会儿毫不费力地拧松了瓶盖,又稍稍拧紧了一些,把它还给了那个人,他假装很费力也没有成功,最后他把它拿到厨房然后不久返回来了,说他试图弄松它,但是只有一双老虎钳。是什么让这个男孩费这么大力气考虑一个陌生人的思想?礼貌,富有同情心的礼貌。

礼貌的其他成分是公平对待其他人的能力,不管他的地位或者重要性。甚至你对有些人有怀疑,也要像他们值得你的最好礼节那样。你也许会惊奇的发现他们真的是那样。我完全相信任何人都能改善他们的礼节通过做三件事。第一,练习礼貌,所有技能都需要不断重复来变成第二天性,好的礼节也不例外。

一种简单的做法就是全神贯注于你的特定领域的行为方式持续一周,电话礼仪,比如说,多久你会说话过于冗长,谈吐过于粗鲁,不能很好的控制自己,让别人等个没完,对中转站失去信心,或者忘记回复电话?

一个重要但是基本的需要记住的事情是拒绝让他人的粗鲁行为刺激你陷入以牙还牙的情况,我讲一个故事是一个年轻人讲给我的,一天晚上他和他的爸爸在车里,另一个司机迎面而来没有减弱他车灯的亮度。“爸爸,用更亮的照他”年轻人愤怒地催促他爸爸,“儿子”爸爸回答“那个司机确实是失礼的或许是愚蠢的,但如果我给他更亮的,他或许会更无礼,愚蠢或者变瞎,这样的恶性循环我不想纠缠!”

第二点改善你的礼仪的需求是用有礼貌的方式思考。未来,像你这样的人会被评价为过去二十年或者三十年你所思考的性质,如果你的想法主要以自我为中心,那么你将是一个自私,无礼的人,另一方面,如果你能让自己体谅他人,如果你能接受他们个性的喜好和问题,希望或者恐惧,好的礼节则会自动地跟随着你。理性的礼貌在婚姻中比在其他任何方面都更加重要,在家庭的亲密氛围中,失望,沮丧,或者生气的情绪很容易转移到最亲密的人身上,这些人经常是丈夫或妻子。“当你感觉你的气愤已经不能控制的时候,”我经常会向另一半倾诉,“强迫你自己在接下来的十分钟里把你结婚的对象当作来家里做客的客人”,我知道也许他们被强加了十分钟的礼貌对待,家里最严重的矛盾会被忘记。

最后,有好的礼仪你一定要学会接受被礼貌对待,开心的接受它,当它发生在你身上要高兴。奇怪的是,有些人对被礼貌对待觉得很可疑,他们怀疑别人有隐藏的目的。

但是一些生活中最珍贵的礼物会没有预兆的来临,你不能通过生活中的任何努力来完成美好的一天,你也不能买到阳光普照甚至玫瑰花的香气,这是世界对我们的礼貌,献出你的爱无所谓回报,好的礼仪大概就是像这样。

最后,最重要的事情是怎样看待他人,不是普通情况下的人们,是个性方面。生活充满了不重要的令人恼火的事,考验,和不公正的行为,不变的,日常的,有效的措施是礼貌,行为的黄金法则,我想如果允许我给他人的至福一个注解的话,那或许是:有礼貌的祝福。

生来不同(Born to Be different)

关于两性的差异性是建立在生物学基础上的这种见解,目前还充满着争议。这种信念很容易被误解,或者被利用来作为一些有伤害性的、使人不愉快的见解的原理。它们能被夸大,夸张地描述男女性“能做”或“不能做”、两者谁好谁坏,这样的描述又往往影响甚广。然而,不可否认的事实是,研究清楚地表明,作为一个团队,男性和女性在几乎每一个可测量的方面都存在差异性。对于这些差异性的研究有助于我们理解为什么男性和女性对彼此迷人而有吸引力的同时,也同时频繁地被对方厌恶和不满。弄清楚什么才是真正意味着男子气概或女性气质能帮助我们客观地对待他人的一些行为——为了躲避类似于“我的见解和行为是正常的,而你的不正常”这样的语言陷阱。男性和女性的差异性是根深蒂固的,而且从我们出生时就已经开始表现出来。

首先,让我们来关注一些实例,例如大脑的结构。很典型的是,男性拥有比女性更大的头盖骨和大脑。但是在智力测试中两性得了近乎相等的分数。我们的大脑区域有着不同的比例分配可以解释这一明显的矛盾。女性的大脑灰质部分比男性多了约15%。大脑灰质是由神经细胞和连接它们的突触结构组成的,有利于神经冲动从大脑的某一区域快速地传递到另一区域。大脑灰质的高密度可以用于解释为什么女性可以看到一场辩论的多个方面,或者同时进行几个任务(或者主持几场对话)。

男人的大脑,而另一方面,有“白质”更丰富的部分。白质,它是由神经元,实际上抑制了信息的传播,它可以让男人非常专注于特定任务,而不被可能与手头的工作相冲突的想法分心。除此之外,男人更大的颅骨中含有更多的能使大脑起到缓冲作用的脑脊液。科学家推断,这反映出在战争和艰苦的活动中渴望的男人历史,这给他们带来有一个人的头部被猛敲了一下的很大的可能性。

我们大脑的差异很大的组成成分导致我们与周围世界互动的方法非常不一样。Simon Baron-Cohen,某本书(书名太长不想打)的作者把经典的女性心理过程称作为“移情”。他把“移情”定义为:为确定另一个人的思想情感和对这些东西做适当的情绪回应的内驱力。“移情”是立即度量和反应周围的情感温度。他们关心于表现敏感给身边的人。这种移情作用的特质能够在女性生活上的全部方面被虚拟地观察:从关于典型女性主导的职业(护理,初等教育,社会工作等)的选择中理解那些主要流行在女性中小事件(浪漫小说,关于关系的文章,关于人们如何能够更好相处的意见栏)是女性对其他人的互动(那些代表性地参与到关于关系,和朋友家庭的亲密谈话,还有对各自忧虑的同情)。移情的思维方式如此的富有力量以至于它甚至影响到典型女性的记忆运作。询问一个女人何时一个特别的事件发生,她总是准确描述它依据一个发生具有情绪内容:那是我妹妹腿断了的那个夏天,或者是“那个时间大约是在XX和XX进行一个很大争吵。”同样地,她有可能带着她的移情思想去解决地理问题。她会记住一个特别的地址不是像第十一和超市街但是是“在我们进行结婚纪念日的饭店旁边”,或者是“在LIZ的老公寓的转角处”。

然而除了这些大大小小的理由外,还有一个更深层的原因。人们突然间如此痴迷于改善自身健康绝非偶然。不错,现代人都渴望健康,但仅靠此举很难使其区别于前人。

由于目光短浅,经济学家总是一厢情愿的认为所有问题皆由经济因素而起。庆幸的是慢跑和经济根本扯不上任何关系,也毫无理由可寻。的确,慢跑是很便宜,但不跑更省钱。慢跑带动的寥寥无几的装备需求恐怕是商人最看不上眼的买卖。一些哲学家争论道:慢跑以及其他体能锻炼是人们给自己制定的一项任务。生活中的个人义务越来越少。工作时间减少,做礼拜也可有可无。科技为我们腾出更多的时间。但如何填补这些时间则需要去想象去努力。自由时间是一条又宽又险的河,足以使那些不会游泳的人沉没。一个人承担的义务越多,耗费时间就越多,相对危险的自由时间就越少。于是慢跑就成了一项的任务。跑步的过程中,他将不属于自己,而完全服从于他所能接受的自己。
